This course complies with California licensure requirements for accessibility (SB 1608 and California Business and Professions Code Section 5600.05), the Texas BOE requirement related to barrier-free design, and provides essential information about accessibility requirements applicable in most states.
Taught by an architect who lost his sight in 2008, this 90-minute video course provides an overview of the range and types of visual impairments that affect users of the built environment. The course explores the significant role design plays in access for those with visual impairments, reviews the limits of ADA standards for architectural guidelines and CBC requirements for those with visual impairments, describes strategies beyond code requirements to increase visual and non-visual accessibility, and discusses sustainability principles for those with visual impairments.
Viewers will develop a better appreciation for why protruding objects, leaning walls, muted colors and hazardous transitions pose strong challenges to the visually impaired, and why “head smack” is part of the daily lexicon for those with visually impairments.
This course is presented in high definition video and is available on computers and most smart phones, tablets and mobile devices. (Video streaming might not be available on some Android devices.) Viewers can also download a course transcript and valuable resource material.
