In this 60-minute video filmed live as part of the AIA California Council's 2011 Monterey Design Conference, Dickson Despommier, PhD, tackles some of the greatest challenges facing humans and the natural world alike. Dr. Despommier demonstrates the concept of vertical farming, a unique way of using technology to change how we grow food, treat the earth, and form our urban spaces. With vertical farming we can create a sustainable and ecologically balanced world in a way that has not been done in the history of human society. In a simultaneously heart-wrenching and uplifting lecture, packed with astounding facts, statistics and anecdotes, Dr. Despommier illustrates that humanity's future can easily be a bright one, but only if we act now.
